Actually, I commute until it gets too cold or snowy; then it's just not fun since all of my bikes are road bikes, and only one has fenders. My commute route is 4 miles in and anywhere from 4 miles to 25 miles home (depends on how much time I have, which is really never more than 1.5hr). The route is all city streets. Speed limits are from 30 to 45mph. Several are multi lane roads.
46yo professional technical, rode a lot when in HS and College; stopped riding in college after my bike was stolen. Started riding again in 1997. Currently ride about 2000 miles / year, hoping to increase that to 2500 or so.
My commuting method is to pack my clothes, laptop, lunch and cell phone in a messenger bag. I keep shoes at the office.
